Sri Lanka’s 1st ever underwater Avurudu festival was held in Trincomalee by Sri Lanka Navy.

An underwater Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration was held for the first time in the seas off Trincomalee.
The event took place at the inner harbour, where divers marked the New Year with traditional rituals and folk games beneath the waves.
Organised by the Malima Diving Club of the Sri Lanka Navy’s Malima Hospitality Services, together with the Navy Diving Unit, the festival aimed to showcase the cultural heritage of both communities while promoting Sri Lanka’s waters as a diving hotspot.
According to the Navy, the unique celebration offered a new way to honour tradition and highlighted the island’s potential for underwater tourism.
