Sri Lanka eyes shipwrecks as new diving hostspots to attract high end tourists.

Sri Lanka is exploring the potential of its numerous shipwrecks as new diving attractions to attarct high-end tourists. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has highlighted shipwreck diving as a key component in its marine tourism roadmap, released on April 10, 2025.

Following a week-long exploratory diving exercise conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in March, which surveyed 11 historically significant shipwrecks off the Colombo coast, the SLTDA is assessing the historical, archaeological, and environmental significance of these sites. Some of these wrecks date back to World War I and have evolved into artificial coral reefs, providing vital habitats for marine life.

SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam emphasized that shipwrecks are not limited to the Colombo area but are scattered throughout Sri Lankan waters. The initiative aims to develop these underwater sites into attractive diving and exploration destinations, targeting adventure-seeking tourists and marine enthusiasts from regions such as the Asia Pacific and Europe.

This strategy is part of Sri Lanka’s broader effort to diversify its tourism offerings and tap into niche markets, thereby boosting revenue through experience-based tourism that engages local communities and offers specialized facilities.
